The Malawi Mission Work Team (MMWT) Foundation supports the Embangweni Hospital in Malawi from a Christian perspective of charity. Since 2006, a new renovation project has been carried out every year. Each project involves thorough renovation or, if necessary, rebuilding and expansion of a section of the hospital. In recent years, the pediatric ward, men’s and women’s wards, maternity wards, and the surgical department with a burns unit have been completely renovated.

All projects are carried out by Malawian workers using materials sourced locally. The projects are overseen by Mr. Piet du Plessis, who resides in Embangweni with his wife Estelle and is responsible for procurement of materials, supervising workers, and ensuring technical correctness in project execution on behalf of the MMWT Foundation. Each year, the projects are inspected by several board members of MMWT.

All MMWT board members serve pro bono, and Piet receives only a modest volunteer allowance. This keeps the foundation’s costs minimal. Projects are funded through private and corporate donations to the foundation. Additionally, MMWT sends out teams to adopt (part of) projects.
